Potential Causes of Shoulder Pain

What is shoulder pain?

An injury in the shoulder or any disease can cause shoulder pain. The shoulder is at high risk for injury as an extremely mobile joint that plays a central role in the action of a major extremity such as the arm.

Cartilage, ligaments or tendons surrounding the shoulder joint, cartilage, or joints of the bone can be involved in an injury. Shoulder pain can also occur due to diseases or conditions involving the shoulder joints. Soft tissues, bones surrounding the shoulder and nerves supplying sensation in the shoulder area can also cause shoulder pain.

The shoulder pain can range from pain while moving it to the point where there is the inability to move the arm overhead.

Some of the are:

  1. Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a common condition in which the shoulder stiffens, reducing its mobility. This most commonly occurs in people of the age group 40-60. Most common in women, a frozen shoulder is very painful and makes it nearly impossible to do any kind of chore without pain
  2. Shoulder fracture
A fracture occurs due to a broken humerus. A humerus is the upper arm bone between your elbow and shoulder. Commonly called a broken shoulder, the humerus can be broken in many places. The fracture is described by the location of the broken part
  3. Shoulder fracture
  4. Shoulder Arthritis
The shoulder has two joints. There is cartilage present inside these joints. Shoulder arthritis occurs when the damage is caused to the cartilage. The bigger ball-and-socket joint named the glenohumeral joint is commonly referred to as shoulder arthritis
  5. Shoulder Dislocation
An injury in which your upper arm bone pops out of the cup-shaped socket that's a part of your shoulder blade is known as Shoulder Dislocation.
The signs and symptoms of shoulder dislocation are:
    • Intense pain
    • Swelling or bruising
    • Inability to move the joint
    • Visibly deformed or out-of-place shoulder
  6. Rotator Cuff Injuries
In people who repeatedly perform overhead motions in their jobs or sports, rotator cuff injuries are very common. A group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the head of your upper arm bone firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder are called the rotator cuff. It causes dull pain in the shoulder. The pains get worse when slept on the affected side.
